This time’s question: “Is there a way to straighten perms while minimizing hair damage?
Extend perms using a hair dryer.
Always use an out-bath treatment before ironing.
Set the temperature of the iron low.
This time the question was, “Is there any way to extend the perm while reducing the damage to my hair?”
I recently had a perm, but some days I have to grow it out, and I pull it out with a straightening iron in the mornings after I dry my hair.
This has inevitably caused my coloring to fade and hair damage to worsen. Can you tell me how to extend the perm while reducing the pain in my hair?
Use a hair dryer to extend the perm.
Many respondents said that using a hair dryer to extend perms would probably reduce the damage to their hair.
‘I think you should extend your perm with a blow dryer!’ When your hair is half-dried, use a hand comb or brush to pull and dry your hair so that there is tension in the hair. It is even better if you keep the ends pulled tight and turn the heat of the hair dryer to cold to lock in the shape.” (Natura Sakae, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture)
“If you are worried about color fading or damage, depending on how well the perm is done, one way is to pull the hair while drying it with your hands. (Tokyo/Edogawa, Orange Pop Kasai)
“We recommend using a blow dryer with a brush to extend perms, or a hair dryer that doesn’t get too hot, such as a kuru kuru dryer, to extend perms. (Osaka/Osaka hair & make KOKORO)
Always use an out-bath treatment before ironing.
Many respondents said they should always apply an out-bath treatment before ironing to protect their hair from the heat.
I think it’s important to always give your hair a non-drip treatment before and after you dry it.” (Kanagawa/Kawasaki Cherish)
There are styling products on the market that protect against heat. If you put it on before blow drying or ironing, it will protect your hair from damage and fading. (Couturier Chou-Chou, Funabashi, Chiba)
I recommend a treatment with CMC to prevent color fading, dryness, and excessive moisture loss from ironing. (Tokyo/Suginami HAIR SALON stop lady)
“If you apply a very small amount of oil-based out-balance treatment to the ends of your hair while it is dry, and then use an iron with the temperature set low, I think you will be able to control damage to a great extent. (Tokyo/Shibuya hair OrB ebisu)
Set the temperature of the iron to low.
One of the responses raised the idea of setting the temperature of the iron as low as possible to reduce damage.
“Try ironing for shorter periods of time and setting the temperature about 10 degrees lower than it is now!” (Tokyo/Setagaya gally)
“Iron at a temperature between 140 and 160 degrees Celsius, and apply it to one spot for no more than 8 seconds. Then, iron on absolutely dry hair.” (Fukuoka/Higashi OFA’s, Fukuoka) (Fukuoka Prefecture/Higashi OFA’S HAIR Nexus Store)
How was it? If you have a loose perm, it is better to blow dry your hair with a hair dryer to extend the perm, which seems to be less stressful on the hair. If you are worried about damaging your hair even after applying an out-balance treatment or using an iron at a low temperature, consult your hair stylist!
