Magazines, TV shows, billboards in town…. We often see and hear about “head spas,” but we don’t really know what they are. Do I need to go to a salon? Is there anything I can do at home? For those of you who have never experienced a head spa, here is what you need to know.
What is a head spa anyway?
Head spa is a treatment that originated in Ayurveda in India and was developed in Japan, and is actually a term coined by the Japanese.
Incidentally, Ayurveda is a traditional Indian medicine that covers a wide range of topics, including diet, yoga, and other health practices. The term “head spa” is used to refer to care that not only washes the scalp, but also massages the scalp, which has a high concentration of pressure points, to provide relaxation.
People often think “head spa = scalp care,” but head spas are a part of scalp care.
What do they do at the salon?
When we think of head spas, we have a strong image of them being performed by professionals at hair salons and the like. However, the price is quite expensive, and one may wonder, “Is it really necessary to go all the way? You may be asking yourself, “Why bother? Let’s take a look at what kind of care is provided at a salon.
Scalp counseling
We check the condition of your scalp to see if the pores are clogged with sebum and dirt, if it is dry, etc., which are difficult to see on your own.
Scalp cleansing
Using a special cleansing shampoo, we remove dirt deep inside the pores that cannot be easily removed by regular shampooing.
Scalp treatment
The scalp is then massaged while a moisturizing treatment is applied. Massaging the scalp to soften it and stimulate pressure points will not only improve the health of the scalp, but also relieve cold and stiffness throughout the body and reduce stress.
Neck and décolleté massage
Finally, a lymphatic massage is added to the neck and décolleté to facilitate the flow of excess waste.
Although you could probably do this yourself, except for the counseling, the biggest difference between salon and self-care is the massage at every step of the process. A massage performed by a professional and a massage done by yourself are still different in their effects and how they feel.
For example, a stiff shoulder is easy to understand, but it is common to have a stiff shoulder that did not get better after a massage by yourself, but became lighter after a massage by a professional. The same can be said for head spas.
What kind of head spas can I do at home?
As mentioned above, scalp cleansing and treatment can be done at home. Here are some instructions on how to do so.
- Massage the scalp with oil
Apply head spa oil or your usual cleansing oil to a dry scalp, and blend it in with your fingers in a zigzag motion. The top of the head produces a lot of sebum, so be careful.
Rinse with hot water and shampoo.
After thoroughly rinsing off the oil with hot water, wash the scalp again with shampoo, massaging the scalp in zigzag strokes.
- Finish with treatment
Finally, apply a treatment to the scalp and leave for 5 minutes, then rinse off. Normal treatments are applied only to the hair, not to the scalp, but recently there are also types that can be used on the scalp as well. The latter type is better suited for head spas, but if you don’t have one, you can use a regular treatment.
Whether you try it at a salon or on your own, head spas are very pleasant and addictive. If you haven’t experienced it yet, open the door to head spas for yourself!
